Today’s Top 5

1. TN giant fish outta…yep, Chickamauga.

Is the Chick now the Falcon of the middle/north East (or whatever)? Two record-setting limits – including one at 44 lbs – and now a 13.90.

Deets: Chris Coleman, Mar. 15, 13.90 lbs, 25 7/8″ long, 21 1/2″ girth, missed state record set in 1954 by less than a pound. Not net. He caught a 11.4 a couple weeks earlier.

> “I had to just set down on the deck of the boat for about five minutes to regain my composure once we got the fish in the livewell.”

> Chris released the fish back into Chickamauga Lake.

2. Havasu WON event breaks 2 records.

Former 5-fish limit record: 14 lbs. Kidding.

Don’t know what the record was, but now is 26.83, or a 5.3-lb average. And the 2-day record is now 46.97, or a 4.7-lb average. Both records now owned by Justin Hanold from Poway, CA.

3. It’s weird but one of the problems with fish as big as they are in Falcon is getting them to the boat.

Chris Lane talkin’ ’bout Fal-cone. What he meant was:

> Most of our ordinary bass tackle, even the real heavy stuff, isn’t tough enough to pull 10-pound-plus bass out of the standing timber and maze of underwater brush that you find in some areas of that lake.

So…they’re expecting to catch more than a few over 10. That’s LIN-SANE!

4. Redneckin’ Faircloth’s fish.

Hey, we’re all rednecks, but check what happened at last week’s Sabeen Reever Elite:

> Faircloth landed a quality bite to get his day started right. Broussard promptly broke out a duck call and sent out a hailing call to the Jasper, Texas, Elite pro.

> Each bite brought forth another duck call from T-Roy and the customary good-luck knuckle bump with Stegall.

Would hate to think about this being a new trend for Elite observers…though I bet Bassmaster.com’s Stevie Bowman would like it….

5. I have always felt a bit like a redneck in the surfing world.

Former pro surfer, Quiksilver marketing director and bass head Todd Kline.

Wonder if Byronimous Velvick feels like a surfer in the redneck world….

News

1. MI: Buy a Loomis, get a free fishin’ license.

The new GLX jig and worm (JWR) and ShakyHead (SYR) rods are out, and if you buy one of those or any other Loomis stick at this weekend’s Ultimate Sport Show at Devos Place in downtown Grand Rapids, Loomis will cover the cost of your 2013 Michigan fishin’ license

> The new GLX rods include 11 casting and 9 spinning JWR models, and 3 ShakyHead spinning models. [Dang! Does Loomis roll ’em out, or what??]

> The casting lineup includes four 6’8” and four 7’1” JWR rods in medium, medium-heavy, heavy and extra-heavy, and three 7’5” rods in medium-heavy and heavy. Spinning JWR rods include a 6’ medium; two 6’6” medium and medium-heavy; three 6’8” in medium-light, medium and medium-heavy; two 7’1” medium and medium-heavy; and a 7’6” medium.

> The three ShakyHead spinning rods are all 6’10”, and offered in mag-light, mag-medium and mag-heavy.

I MUST HAVE ONE OF EACH – not 23 rods, but 2. I hope one of my buds at Loomis is internalizing that. Hope they want to give a couple out to BassBlaster readers….

2. Z on why U NEED round reels…

…meaning Shimano Calcutta Ds, which are shweet!

3. Secret signing of Byron “BJ” Haseotes.

Secret Lures, and BJ is an Elite angler. Said: “I have been using their products for a few years with success. It is rewarding to be able to represent a company’s products that I have confidence in.”

4. First Uncle Homer bass derby.

Great idea. Thanks again Uncle Homer, one of the first guys to ever cover bassin’ derbies.

Tip of the Day

TackleTour.com: MegaBass V110 tips.

Do you own a Vision 110? If not, why not? I hear they’re awesome…a bud has mine…. No, no, man, it’s cool, it’s cool…(sniff). Anyhow, great stuff from TT – I’d put the article in the “must read” category:

> If you look at the Katsuage hooks that come stock on the Vision 110, you’ll notice they are very fine wire. Most anglers see this and think the hooks need to be replaced because they’re far too thin. Given how heavy a line most anglers choose these days, and the pressure at which they set their drag, they’re probably right. What anglers need to realize is Megabass intends this bait to be fished on light line, preferably 10 or even 6 pound test.

> Using light line allows the bait to reach its optimal swimming depth of 4 to 6 feet, but also enables the bait to move more freely in the water. Retrieved properly, the Vision 110 not only darts from side to side but it does so in an arching fashion shooting up, and then back down as you jerk your rod tip.

> Simply changing the hooks to achieve different fall rates and therefore, running depths doesn’t work with this bait.

Quote of the Day

I hate it. It’s a boring, pathetic technique.

Skeet Reese, talkin’ ’bout Carolina-rigging. He’s not real good at ‘spressin’ his feelin’s, but he’s workin’ on it. Also said:

> I’ll dropshot, splitshot, throw a jig before I’ll Carolina rig.

Shot of the Day

This 14.06 was just caught today at Lake Fork, TX. Is it just me or do full-figured gals look more attractive this time of year?
