Today’s Top 3

1. WTHeck is going on at Chickamauga?!

In late Feb a derby on TN’s Chickamauga was won with 37.96 lbs. Last weekend that was beat with a 44.30-lb limit (two 10+, I guess a couple 8+, one 7+). And one of the guys in the boat was half of the team that had the prior giganto limit.

3 things to put that in perspective:

1. Dean Rojas’ record-setting B.A.S.S. limit on FL’s Toho during the spawn was 45-02 – less than a pound more!

2. 2nd place in last weekend’s Chick derby was a more-than-respectable 35 lbs – and they lost by 10!

3. It’s frickin’ Chickamauga, TN!!!! We’re not talking Fork or Okeechobee here, folks.

Awesome. I’m emailing Obama to okay a fish pipeline from there to here in Jersey.

2. Sabine…not looking great.

Maybe there’s a reason the Sabine hasn’t hosted a major bassin’ derby befo’?

Aaron Martens

> I found some good water and got bites in it, but you catch a lot of small fish. It’s hard to get a 14-incher no matter I throw. I caught a couple nice ones – 2 1/2-pounders, but I don’t see many of those.

> I don’t have any maps of this place on my graph, so I was using my phone a lot to look at Google Earth.

Brent Chapman

> I have a feeling it’s going to fish pretty small.

> The fishing was not nearly as versatile as I thought it would be for this time of year. It was very bait-specific.

Brent also said, “It’s very similar to the [LA] Delta,” which is exactly how BassGold looked at it…or I looked at it with BassGold….

3. Will MO be the third (fourth?) high school bassin’ state?

So far only IL and KY have officially sanctioned it. No AL, no FL, no TX, etc. Now MO is talking about it:

> Our only question is, what took so long? Missouri is behind the times, with Illinois, Kentucky and Tennessee [TN too?] having already added the growing television sport to its varsity ranks. And South Carolina is considering doing the same thing.

> [MO] lawmakers should be outraged. We suggest they up the ante. Bass fishing should not only be a varsity sport in Missouri, it should be adopted as the official state varsity sport, sponsored, of course, by Bass Pro Shops. Lawmakers might even consider replacing the bears on the state flag with a couple of bigmouth bass.

The SC DNR is having its own high school championship, on Murray in 10 days.

And lawmakers only get outraged when they’re caught doing something illegal or immoral. Even then it’s only fake outrage….

1. Kroenke gets Outdoor Channel.

Say goodbye to Intermedia Outdoors getting the Outdoor Channel. What does this mean for the parties involved? Have my theories, will wait and see.

> Outdoor Channel Holdings Inc agreed to be acquired by Kroenke Sports & Entertainment LLC for about $8.75 per share in cash, nearly four months after it accepted an $8.00 offer from Leo Hindery’s InterMedia Outdoors Holdings LLC.

This may be a telling statement, from an OC shareholder who opposed the Intermedia deal, talking about a combined OC-Intermedia Outdoors:

> “…an entity that will be saddled with significant  long-term debt, have little available cash on hand and carry an exposure to a struggling publishing unit.”

2. Bass Mafia adds BP.

Brandon Palaniuk joins Hackney, Browning and Starks on the Elites as a mafioso.

> “I have been using the Bass Mafia Bait Coffins for quite a while now. Those things are nearly indestructible! The durability and functionality of the Bait Coffin is unparalleled. Nothing else out there even comes close.”

Anyone use those? Sound interesting.

3. Corps moving to restrict access below Cumberland dams.

Apparently to avoid drownings. If so, bubbye tailwaters. The TN and KY DNRs aren’t happy.

4. PA’s DEP chief says he’d eat Susq smallies.

(**cough**Bullspit!**cough**) This is the head of the agency that’s been dragging its feet while the Susquehanna smallie fishery tanks.

5. OH’s AEP sets bass limits.

6. Peta asks VT to kill kids fishing program.

When will these idiots go away…. Btw, this is one of my favorite T-shirts of all time, but can’t own it because I’d have to send peta money:

I’M NOT A NUGGET! Hahahahahahaha! Gimme some sweet ‘n’ sour sauce with that….

7. New ramp coming for WV’s West Fork River.

8. The goal for the pond would be for the growth to stunt and get no bigger than about 12-14 inches.

Article talking about a new largie pond. The goal is stunted fish! In TX! Another quote from the story:

> “Given the type of fishery we’re trying to manage there, anything over 14 inches I would call a trophy.”

Why not go with catfish then.

Tip of the Day

Davy Hite on cranking speed.

One of MANY tidbits from The Bass University classes I sat in on a couple weeks back. Davy talked about cranking and while emphasizing that bait speed is key said:

> “It’s not all gear ratio. You need to know how many inches of line per turn of the handle you’re moving, and that depends on spool width and diameter.”

> “So don’t watch this [he mimicked a cranking motion] on TV – it could mean anything.”

Was one of those forehead-slappers for me, maybe you too.

Quote of the Day

Hmm. Works for me.

– Davy Hite, KVD’s roommate, on what Kevin says when people say he should try using a knot other than a Palomar.

Shot of the Day

Yet more proof that toothy fish are dumber than bass. Or…a Minnesotan’s dream breakfast…lol!
