Today’s Top 3

Worn plum out from the ol’ ICAST show. Have to say I was actually impressed by a few things, which is HIGHLY unusual for a jaded “industry vet” like me. Anyhow, three vids I saw at ICAST you need to see. The first two have good buds fishing the best rods and reels period – and are worth watching. The last one Kelly Jordon was making everyone watch. Already has 4 mil views, hopefully you haven’t seen it yet.

1. Power with Z and 2D (aka, Dave Mercer).

The new Calcutta D reel. I know low-pro is all the rage, but if you haven’t gone round in a while, when you fish this reel, you’ll miss it.

2. Power and Finesse with Z.

Z “beats the crap out of” the new Loomis GLX rods at Falcon. I can see him on that call with Loomis: “Yeah, uh, to really test these things out you’ve gotta get me to Falcon….” Nice one, mang!

Almost forgot re: the new GLXs:

> 12 crankbait rods (CBR) in 6’6”, 7’, 7’1” and 7’11” lengths, and six flipping rods (FPR) in 7’5” and 7’11”.

> The rods are 23% to 35% stronger than the gen1 GLX rods,. Also lighter, if you can believe it.

3. The one two that got away.

Caution: one S-word and one A-word.

Tip of the Day

Denny on fishing shallow in hot water.

“I won the 1998 Bassmaster Classic at High Rock Lake in North Carolina fishing in the middle of the day in 2-foot-deep water. There was more oxygen in that 2 feet of water than in any-other parts of the lake. The bait was holding in that shallow water, and the bass were concentrating there, feeding on the bait.

“Most bass fishermen overlook boat waves. I won that tournament on the main part of the lake, where there was a lot of boat action and a lot of waves hitting the bank.

“We know that wind blowing into a point oxygenates the water, thereby causing the bass to bite. But we forget boats make a wave action that crashes against the bank, oxygenates the water and causes a feeding frenzy on the shad, which makes the bass bite.

“So, waves from water skiers and other boats oxygenate the water, causing bass to feed in shallow water, even in the middle of the day.”

Quote of the Day

Every time I picked up a different rod from my deck it had a different feel.  It would always take several casts to get used to each different outfit.

– Elite pro Brandon Card talking about how it’s important to not to have a hodge podge of different-brand rods and reels.

Shot of the Day

I know this is legal and all, but it still breaks my heart….
