Today’s Top 3

1. Look at this 10-lb spot!

Yowza! Randy Pierson of Oakdale, CA, New Melones lake spotted bass record: 10-01, 26.25″ long and 20″ girth. Spotted bass record has broken there now 3x since last year.

No word on the bait, he was prefishing for an upcoming tournament.

Z, how ’bout a show there, man!

2. O.

That’s an “O,” not a zero, stands for “Outstanding,” the grade I give The Bass University. Went to my first sessions at the Suffern, NY tackle show this weekend, and wow, great. Didn’t/couldn’t see all the speakers, but was able to see Greg Hackney, Davy Hite and Pete Gluszek. Stellar.

Also saw Ike do the hawg trough because my 10-year-old son wanted to see him. Another O. Ike had the couple-hundred folks there wrapped around his finger, and looked like at least 25% of folks were there just to be entertained, not really learn about bassin’. Very interesting.

Tx much for Pete, Ike, Jared and the rest of The Bass U crew for inviting me, and for giving me a chance to talk about BassGold. Should mention that BassGold is now a Bass University partner….

3. New Grand Lake largie record…

…on an A-rig!

Records for all 3 bass species at Grand, the Classic locale, were set last year…right around the time of the Classic. We were hoping to see another landed, didn’t, but didn’t have to wait long.

Last weekend, at a Nichols Marine derby, the largie record of 10.86 was blasted into outer space by Billy Lemon of Sand Springs. He landed a 12.3 that was 23″ long and 21″ around, which almost makes it a basketball. Here ’tis:

Sho nuff caught it on an A-rig, what the Classic guys would’ve been throwing too if they could: Specific-like, was a YUMbrella rig with Gene Larew Sweet Swimmers (Alabama shad).

Favorite quote from the story:

> “We kept the weigh-in going, but he must have had 50-60 people back there taking pictures. You’d have thought an alien landed,” said tournament director Stan Honeycutt.

Tip of the Day

Pete Gluszek: Chatterbait tips.

From The Bass U yesterday. Won’t give everything away, like how Pete custom-creates his own Chatterbait (go to Bass U!), but some great stuff here:

> Pitch it straight into grass, even with an exposed hook.

> Rip it out of the grass. Use braid and snap your wrist [heavy-action rod] – that lets the braid cut through the grass and pops it only a short distance. The bait stops and the skirt flares.

> Never set the hook right away. For some reason, fish almost always hit a Chatterbait from the rear. So when you feel tick-tick, reel down, take the slack out and then hit him. Same with a swimbait.

> Use Krazy Glue with a brush applicator (key) to make sure your swimbait [on the Chatterbait] doesn’t rip off.

> He uses Gamma braid with a 5′ fluorocarbon leader, even in dirty water. He finds he gets more bites that way, doesn’t know why. Knot is an albright knot. “You have to practice that knot. Because if you cross lines or twist it, it’s not going to perform for you.

> Spend some time sharpening your hook.

> On a black chatterbait, black blade, with a white swimbait: “It looks ridiculous to me – I don’t know why it should catch them so good, but it’s a killer combination.”

Quote of the Day

The guy who lifts that trophy deserves it.

Bassmaster.com’s Stevie Bowman stating something about Classic champs that’s true in the best way possible: simply. Also said:

> I know it is and has been their Classic to enjoy in any way they want.

> I know to suggest anything otherwise is a disservice to our sport’s greatest title, which is and will always be a measure of fishing skills, nothing more, nothing less.

Dang it, Bowman’s right again….
