What’s a slaunch, Why not spotties, Foolproof largie pattern?

This Blaster brought to you by Dynamite’s “Blackout Station” — the album you wish AC/DC would make. Slammin’.

Today’s Top 5

WTHeck is a “slaunch”??

Finally had to ask, surprised I never asked before. Just figured it was another Zona-ism…then again every syllable that comes out of Z’s mouth, while it may seem totally off the cuff, bizarrely is not. Or maybe it is, but he can improvise a 5-minute story about it. So here’s the origin of “slaunch:”

> The truth of slaunch is it’s named after a guy I know. We combined sloth, haunch and slob. Unfortunately this man has passed, but oh did it fit.

See what I mean? More from Z:

> I’ve heard many pros, other hosts, and hot chicks use the word — I’m proud when I hear it.

> I’ve been using “slaunchy slaunch” a lot recently….but in all honesty it’s a very versatile word.

Versatile as in:

> My, don’t you look slaunchy today.
> My slaunchy slaunch burger doesn’t have jalapenos on it!
> Don’t you slaunch me like that!

Bloated melons of the week.

The Toledo Bend lunker parade has started yo! Here’s a couple from the last week, starting with a 12.37 caught on a C-rigged Brush Hog (watermelon red), Stanley Wedge Weight (no oz listed) 15-lb P-Line fluoro, Lew’s Pro Speed Spool reel, and 7′ 6″ medium-heavy 13 Fishing Omen rod in 4′.

This dude caught two DDs in a week! A 10.61 (C-rigged Zoom Mag Finesse Worm in red bug at the bottom of a creek channel in 18′) and a 10.24 (1/2-oz Talon jig in gp with a Strike King Rage Chunk). Here’s the 10.24:

How ’bout an East-Coaster — an 11.46-lb SC melon caught on a 1/2-oz Strike King Spinnerbait (sexy shad). Dude said: “Upstate lake — I really can’t give any more deets cuz it has Bill Dance-caliber bass in it.” lol

Why not ‘spotties’?

Largies, smallies — guess why not “spotties?” They call ’em “spotties” in South Africa. Learned that, and that they have 8-lb+ smalls, at this lake:

Flo-ri-da – take a little trip….

Was supposed to be at the Okee Elite this weekend but once again can’t friggin’ make it. But been hummin’ the tune “Flo-rye-da” — my version of War’s “Lowrider.” Cuz wish I was there and cuz wish I LIVED there.

Goes like this-here:

Kick-tush metal version here.

From around the bassin’ intrawebz.

Just stuff:

1. Spin it.

You know when you slam a baitcaster handle to see the spool spin? Bet you’ve never seen one spin like this-here:

2.Cool vid: How Ike weights Shad Raps.

Shad Raps kick tail in cold water….

3. Fishermen get fish delivered by drone.

Publicity stunt for some app. My 2c: The whole drone thing has no place in fishing.

News

1. Interesting Z post on Cherokee.

Highlights:

> Simply put, that was one of the most window-specific tournaments I’ve ever covered. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that you will never see that jig and minnow technique ever dominate like that other than on those Tennessee lakes in the middle of winter.

> …those smallmouth were only interested in 3-inch shad — period.

> One thing I’m still totally perplexed by is how none of the high-caliber dropshotters on the Elites could get those fish to eat a dropshot. I’m still stunned by that.

Glad somebody said it….

2. BassEdge Radio has BAM’s Mark Lassagne.

3. CA: Casitas Santa Ana ramp now open.

4. FL: Cancer benefit derby at Kissimmee April 15.

For a young girl. Be there if you can….

5. FL: New ramp coming on Buffum.

6. Classic impact = $24 million?

Wow that’s a big number. B.A.S.S. peeps, remember that if you get too big, your jeans won’t fit…or something like that:

[Does that even make sense??]

7. FLW gets Columbia Sportswear.

8. AR: Guy wins Dardanelle BFL off one dock.

After 11th-hour switch from co to boater:

> …he fished the entire day at just one spot — a dock which had some brush and cover nearby. “The bass were after baitfish, and the wind was blowing perfectly to pin the bait against the dock and brush. …I must have caught around 20 to 25 keepers.”

> …caught his fish on just two baits: a Strike King Red Eye Shad and a white Strike King Pure Poison with a white YUM Swim’N Dinger. “The Red Eye Shad was what I caught my bigger fish on. The key was fishing it super-fast and triggering a reaction bite.”

9. CT: Herbicides in Candlewood?

Sounds like local residents behind it, could crush a good bassin’ fishery. That link is a petition.

10. GA ranks HS bass teams?

If so, cool.

11. MX: Crazy Lake Pikachu numbers.

> In March and April, when the baitfish are spawning, anglers sometimes catch 100 bass without moving the boat, and most weigh 3 to 5 lbs.

Sounds just like NJ…not.

12. Sufix 832 Braid new lower price.

I kinda like the Seth Feider neon lime color.

13. New KVD H2 HydroWave available…

…but not at TackleWarehouse yet. 🙁

14. New Honda/Acura outboard concept.

I think that’s serious? Reminds me of:

15. New conservation scholarship…

..named after former B.A.S.S. conservation director Noreen Clough who passed on in 2015. Cool.

16. FL and GA fighting over water.

I’m going with the Lane bros on this one….

17. Blue Heron gets BOOYAH, YUM and other brands.

Well-known PR company that for some reason some folks call “Blue Herring.” It’s HERON, man, like the Elitist Matt! lol

Tip of the Day

Ike’s can’t miss cold-water largie pattern.

Can’t miss eh? Mikeonelli on Bassin’masters.com:

> I’ve been using a prespawn pattern for a while now that works just about everywhere in the country. It produced for me at the Cherokee Lake Elite….

> The first consideration with this pattern is water temperature. It works best in water that’s 45-49 degrees, but there is some flexibility in those numbers. The real key is that they’re just starting to move.

> Most of our reservoirs have areas of flat rocks. They’re kind of like flat tabletops that lay on top of each other. Some are thin and tight while others are thick and loose. And, they’re made out of all different kinds of rock.

> What is important is that they need to start in fairly deep water and stretch back into shallow backwater areas and hollows.

> The bass hang out between the last line or row of rocks and the shore. I’ve caught them in water so shallow I couldn’t believe I didn’t see their fins sticking up, and I’ve caught them as deep as 5′.

> I fished a lot of these places in Cherokee without having prefished them or even having found them in practice. The pattern is that reliable.

> My best lure was probably a Rapala DT6 crankbait in a shad color. I’d throw it right up against the shore and bring it back somewhere between slow and medium.

> Another lure that worked for me was a 1/2-oz Missile Jigs Mini Flip in a crawfish color. I’d throw it all the way up on the bank and bring it back with a real slow crawl.

Quote of the Day

If your goal is to fish the championship, then you’ve reached it the first morning.

Ish Monroe with the BEST way of phrasing that truth I’ve ever heard. I see it every year: Guys just happy to be at the Classic (or Super Bowl, etc.) never win. The ones focused on winning win or do the best. Full Ish quote:

> If your goal is to fish the championship, then you’ve reached it the first morning. There’s nothing left. Winners have their eye on the last day. Only then is there nothing left.
