Two new largie records, Spinning worms work, Too hard a hookset

What up bass-heads? Gonna be on vacation/fishing the next 2 weeks so will either take a week off (not sure I can do it — I’m a bass addict too mang!) or do one BB a week for those weeks. Not sure which — it’ll be a surprise. Tx much for reading this zaniness, hope you ketch ’em this weekend!

If you’re getting the BassBlaster for the first time it’s cuz a bud signed you up!

Today’s Top 5

Melons of the week.
David Rabalais caught that 14.12 on July 29. Ate a Texas-rigged worm in 15-16′. Previous record was a 12.54 caught in April 2013.

> “The next morning when I woke up I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. I caught a 10 pounder at Lake Nacogdoches about 30 years ago, but this one was way bigger than that.”

New Sardis, OK lake record: 12-00.

Jeremie Green caught it in a jackpot derby. This one’s a little weird because the prior lake record largie weighed MORE: 13-08 caught in 1994:

> …the fish would be considered the lake record due to updated record keeping criteria since the original record was caught.

Say wha??

> …worked their way to a wooded point mid-lake. …switched to a 10″ Power Worm to pitch it around trees.

4-yr-old lands 9-lber on Fork.

> Taylor is 4 years old and caught a 9-lb bass that measured just under 24″ on a “Frozen” Elsa pole from the movie. Fish was caught on an underspin in 18′. Congrats to Taylor and her dad Jason.

Wow! An underspin?? Wait — Elsa fished in “Frozen”?

‘Nother kid-ketched lunker.

Ethan is waaaaaay older than Taylor, and landed what looks like a bigger fish?

All you adults better git a-fishin’ and send in some pics!

Do hooks rust out or…?
Figgered they did but this shot by @fishinglifestyle on the Insta makes me wonder:
Amazed they can pass a hook. Looks pretty ouchy.
Meet Mary Minor.
Why is Mary in the BB? Check out this pic:
That’s Mary next to a blow-up of the 2017 Strike King catalog cover, holding a catalog she autographed for me. She’s on the cover — a huge deal — because she’s been at Strike King for 40 years. Which, uh, you know means she’s, uh, at least…30 years old. (Dang it, no winning that one, sorry Mary!)Mary started at Strike King as a 16-year-old high school student, worked hard, did great, climbed the ladder and is now Strike King’s key account manager. If her last name sounds familiar, that’s cuz she’s married to Doug Minor, Strike King’s VP of sales and marketing.

If you see Mary this year, or any year, congratulate her. Forty years anywhere, let alone at one of the biggest companies in fishing, is tremendous.

Two more things:

1. Mary can out-fish you and fishes more than you. Can shoot better than you too.

2. Mary’s son, Zack Cozart, plays for the Cinci Reds, which I believe is the team Pete Rose won in a blackjack game. Kidding…he should be in the HOF in my opinion. If you disagree, well…OJ’s in the football HOF.

How you know when you set the hook too hard.
Easy there Hulk:
Will these frogs catch more bass?
Will the basses think they’re easier prey??
Seriously tho, makes me wonder that whether a frog that hunts — runs one way for a while, then another way — might actually work?

News

1. MD: Tides key at Potomac?

Headline from a B.A.S.S. article: Strategies will be built around tidal flows as Elite Series visits Potomac River.

Okay, I bet that will be true, but many Potomac derbies — including major ones (Horton, Yelas, others) — have been won on spots. Wouldn’t be surprised to see it again, especially at this level.

Planned to be there, won’t make it, wife making me take that vacation. Bummed cuz me and Bowman were gonna have a wrasslin’ match….

2. NJ: Ike celeb pro-am this weekend.

3. Gal wins trip with Biffle.

Honestly every trip with Tommy is…a trip.

4. AL: Duckett Marine open for biz.

Boyd makes money by hypnotizing people so be careful! lol

5. FLW adds 7th Tour event.

Feb. 2-5 at Gville, first Tour event next year.

6. West: 2017 Wild West schedule.

New GA/AL division.

Not really….

7. AL: Legends HOF names award after Ray Scott.

> The Legends of the Outdoors National Hall of Fame is changing the name of its prestigious Trailblazer Award from the famous frontiersman to Alabama angler Ray Scott who will also be its first recipient.

So…it’s prestigious but hasn’t been awarded yet? Not sure what that HOF is. Anyone?

Regardless, Ray deserves it and everything else he gets. He’s fo sho the godfather of bassin’.

8. FL: Trafford is back.

9. MO: Lee’s Summit may relax regs…

…preventing fishermen from leaving bass boats in driveways. Really?? Sounds like a harsh place to live.

10. AZ: Powell bass around tumbleweeds??

11. VT: Swimmers clogging up boat ramps.

Those swimmers are lucky they’re not in TX!

12. NY: Grass carp may be used in Mahopac.

Ruh-roh. Here’s what a lake looks like after a year with grass carp:

> Will Yocum…frequently accompanied Fred Washburn, his grandfather, to National Fishing Lure Collectors Club shows. “One day I wanted to start collecting. I asked my pa-pa if I could start collecting something. He suggested Rat-L-Traps. We went home and found a good bit of them that he had fished with. There were 364.”

> Those 364 lures have grown into 3,653 Rat-L-Traps of every size and color combination.

So gramps had 364 ‘Traps to start with? Guess ‘Traps kill the basses in IL?

Gitcha ‘Traps at TW. For any other collectors, the ‘Trap website has more colors.

15. 13-yo entrepreneur buys bassin’ tub first.

> Kyle Graham, 13, founder of Call of Doodie Pet Waste Removal….

> In his short entrepreneurial stint, he’s already raised enough money to buy a 17-foot bass fishing boat for $3,300.

So kid works hard and has his priorities straight. Good job, parents!

16. Rapala Skitter V deets.

> Quick rod snaps create drastic direction changes, followed by soft, long glides on slack line, constantly enticing topwater strikes.

Sure does! Git it here on TW.com.

18. New Zoom triple-laminate Trick Worm.19. New Lew’s western sales VP.

Terry Pederson.

20. Honda Marine iso sales rep.

Northern-tier states…where it’s cold…really too cold….

21. What is this?

Either a Phoenix in process or some kinda strawberry art:

Line of the Day

Fishing can take a very long time since many types of lures aren’t very effective.

– Bwahahahahaha! From a press release on some sort of snake lure that has oil (wait — snake…oil?). This too:

> It can even be weighed down so it travels close to the ocean floor.

Aaaaaaaaaand that’s all you need to know about that….

Tip of the Day

Says so on Bassin’masters.com. All you have to do is rig your worms wrong…lol:

> You won’t hear much about it right now, but it’s fairly common in Japan. It’s developing a real following on the West Coast, and a pretty good number of Elite Series are quietly using it when they want to show clear-water, highly-pressured bass something different.

> Like everything these days…our modern version is fancier. I start my rig with a Havoc Bottom Hopper worm although…almost any straight-tail worm will work. If you use a twister tail, the ripple action has a tendency to straighten out the corkscrew action of the worm.

> My worms are armed with a VMC SpinDrift hook. It’s made for this exact presentation. The reason I use the VMC hook is because it has a bait keeper and a swivel already on the shank just before the eye. The swivel is important. An in-line barrel swivel works OK and it’ll keep the twist out of your line, but you have to tie it on with a knot on each end. Knots, even the best that are tied by the best, are always problematic.

> Always rig your worm with a twist and a kink in it. That’ll insure you get a good corkscrew action. Do everything you wouldn’t do when you Texas rig a worm to avoid line twist.

> …Carolina-style with a slow lift, pull and drop retrieve. If I want to get a little more depth — say I’m fishing below 5 feet — I add a splitshot sinker.

That rig is used to catch walleyes all the time. If this is a walleye technique moving over to bass, it’s gotta be a sign of the Apocalypse.

The hook isn’t on Tackle Warehouse (yet?), but you can find ’em here on the VMC site.

Quote of the Day

Hey, you kids want to find a Pokemon? Well, there’s one hiding in that push lawn mower right there. And once you cut all the grass with it, the Pokemon will pop out.

– The one and only G-man talkin‘ ’bout bein’ amazed that Pokemon Go is being pitched as an “outdoor” experience:

> Isn’t that like saying, I’m going deer hunting…down in the basement?

Yep, sorta. I did find this in Swindle’s boat tho:

A Poke ball head jig! What up with that, G?
