Today’s Top 3

Mixed bag today:

1. The chances were better if I fished it rather than staying at home on the couch.

FLW pro Jason Christie talking about his slim chances of qualifying for the Classic by fishing the Northern Opens. He won the Detroit/St. Clear Northern Open last week. Here’s the whole quote:

The chance I had to win was pretty slim, considering the local competition and the fact that I don’t chase brown fish a lot. But the chances were better if I fished it rather than staying at home on the couch.

2. When I see a log in the water, I don’t just see a log – I see where it enters the water, each individual branch, where the sun is casting shadows, etc. I don’t just cast to a bush.

– Gary Klein, talking on bassfishingarchives.com about how flipping changed how pros fished. Here’s what came before that quote:

Flipping wasn’t just a new technique – it was a new philosophy,” he said. “It was about how to catch a certain type of fish that’s relating to cover. To sum it up, the technique is just a way to present a lure in shallow water. But it also teaches you to learn patterns within patterns.

3. Look at this shot by Overstreet!

That’s B.A.S.S. shutter-man James Overstreet, from his Facebook page. Dang! Anyone recognize the fisherman?!

Tip of the Day

“Another thing I’ve learned from fishing a lot is I don’t think we, as bass fisherman, use big enough baits. You’ll catch a 2-pounder and it’s a got a 3/4-pound baitfish in its mouth, it tells you we’re not using big-enough stuff.”

Tip of the Day 2

Since we have quotes in the Top 3, we’ll go with another tip here:

Bernie Schultz: Don’t just throw ‘a buzzbait.’

> If there is a light chop, he likes a clacker-style buzzbait. Under calmer conditions, he throws a squealer, and when the grass is just touching the surface, he throws an in-line buzzbait.

> Clacker-style baits like the Hildebrandt HeadBanger typically do better with a faster retrieve, while squealer-style buzzbaits are best when fished slow enough to keep them just on the surface.

> Schultz says the No. 1 problem he sees from novice buzzbaiters is their lack of dedication. “A buzzbait is something that you need to work at. A lot of guys will throw it a few times, and if they don’t get a hit, they’ll put it down,” he says. “Though you’ve probably got the right bait, you may not be in the right area. Take some time to figure out where they’re holding.”

Shot of the Day

Not real sure how B.A.S.S. emcee Dave Mercer took that pic, but it’s cool! (Snagged from his Facebook page.)
