My Top Secret Bait Experience

Friend of mine called me earlier this year, told me he had something he wanted to show me. A new type of fishing lure.

Now, even though I know this guy is a diehard basser who knows how to catch fish, knows the lure biz and has innovated before, I STILL had the eye roll reflex. I didn’t do it, but I’m thinking: What else is there?

I mean, there’s always something new, but other than the Chatterbait and Andre Moore’s Beaver phenomenon, I was having trouble thinking of something truly “new.” (Berkley’s Power and Gulp! stuff maybe?) Most of the bait biz – I’m not including garage innovators here – seems to be about copying other companies’ incremental innovations…with rare exceptions. Very rare.

All of that ran through my brain in a split second.

My buddy is smart, so he said he wouldn’t tell me about it over the phone. He had to show me. We live several states away from each other so that wasn’t easy, but eventually we got together. And when he showed me…I still was skeptical. Like:

> Would it really work?

> Would fish really be attracted to it?

> Would it catch fish or help catch fish?

> Does the world really need a new bait?

Think about that for a sec. If someone showed you the Chatterbait in a room far away from the water, would you be like, “Yeah! That’s it!”

Probably not. Made me realize how tough it is to “sell” a fishing lure outside of a fishin’ situation.

Anyhow, re: the above questions, the answer to the last one is easy: Yep! We always need new baits.

But the first three questions could only be answered by rigging one up, tying it on and fishing.

I reminded my friend that contrary to the opinions of my kids, I’m not the best basser in the world. He said that was the point: If I could make it work, anyone could. (I felt okay about that at the time, but writing it down now I think I hear the sound of a bubble popping….)

Anyway, long story short, the dang thing works. Nothing else like it before – the fish (and us fishermen) have seen something that looks like it before, but haven’t experienced it before, which is cool. Meaning it’s not something that looks nuts. Looks familiar, just works different.

One of the best things about it is it’s one of those “anyone can rig it and fish it” baits. No, not talking about me, but my kids (9 and 7). They loved rigging it, fishing it and they caught fish with it – bigger fish than they’d get with a bobber and a worm.

Adult bassers will I’m sure find a use for it too, just like we always do.

What’s the bait? Who invented it? Can’t tell you yet, but it’ll be out soon. Big national rollout. Will be interesting to watch, now that I (and now you) have seen things from this perspective.

Okay, here’s a hint: 360.

Well, it was a backlashed attempt at trying to joke on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360”. Your hint was “360”. Please disregard while I pick out the loop knots…

Its a neutrally bouyant swimbait style lure, that is battery operated like the lazer lure, and swims in a circle like a delerious baitfish. Its probably called the tail chaser, named after my dog of course. All you have to do is tie on on and cast it. No bait specific retireve or anything. So easy a 9 and 7 year old could do it. So, how close is that guess Jay?
