Today's Top 5

1. Hack body-slams Pickwick.

The more Greg Hackney fishes, the better he gets. Always been thataway.

He's fishin' both tours this year and has been kickin' butt – 2nd in the Elite AOY points and this weekend winnin' the Pickwick FLW with 97-07 includin' a 31-lb day 2. Here's what he did:

> …fishing a ledge with his Power-Poles locked down tight on the bottom. “I was in 5 feet on top, casting into 8 feet. I made a real long cast and fished back uphill.”

> …a Strike King KVD HC 2.5 square-bill crankbait and a 5-inch Strike King Shadalicious swimbait. He also caught them dragging or hopping a 1/2- or 3/4-ounce Strike King Denny Brauer Structure Jig in black-and-blue or green pumpkin.

Btw, the top 10 threw the kitchen sink: crankbaits, swimbaits, jigs, spoons, dropshots and various worms. Keys were current and a drop or harder bottom.

2. Everybody thinks it’s summer on the Tennessee River so they must be deep.

The Hack Attack sayin' why he thought no one had fished his spot before this time o' year.

3. Sykora wins All-American…

…at Lake Murray, SC, by 2 /1-2lbs with 66-04. Marcus is a well-known MO stick who lives on Lake of the Ozarks (an upland rez), which is nothing like Murray (lowland rez) = stout!

> All three days, Sykora’s primary spot was a long bar extending from the south wall of the Wheeler Dam lock. Current from the dam’s water release schedule would break around this bar and stimulate the bass that were holding along its edges.

> Sykora said that his key baits over the first two days of the tournament were 6th Sense Crush 300DD and 500DD crankbaits. Today he said that he caught his fish on a Chompers football jig and Zoom Ol’ Monster worm.

4. It’s the Tennessee River – a crankbait a jig and a worm. What else do you need?

Marcus Sykora explaining his bait selection.

5. New Mister Twister bait.

Is this old-school brand gettin' back into bassin'? Sounds like it, the latest bein' the new 5” Magnum SinSation:

  • The front half of the body is thicker to affect the bait’s balance and glide, but also to provide a perfect spot to hold your hook securely.
  • The two front Curly Tails produce lift and glide along with attracting pulsations and visual attraction.
  • The back half of the body is thinner to allow the oversized Curly Tail to really get to work.
  • The entire body is ribbed and covered with a series of Poc’it chambers to increase water disturbance and slow its swim.

Tip of the Day

Matty Lee: Ledge Basics.

> By “ledges,” I’m referring to those underwater haunts where a shallow flat falls off into the much deeper old river channel or primary creek channel.

> Today’s modern electronics pair GPS mapping with awesome sonar images to make locating a channel dropoff or ledge pretty easy, but it’s not necessary to have a $3,000 fishfinder to locate a ledge full of bass.

> You can keep it as simple as finding the old river or creek channel on your favorite lake map. As you trace the channel with your eyes, make careful notes of where the channel ‘swings’ or bends along its natural path.

> If that bend or swing is next to a shallow flat or a main lake point in 15 to 30 feet of water, you’ve probably just circled a great spot….

> Boat positioning becomes critical. Remember, it’s a creek or river channel, so there’s probably some current associated with it. So make sure you’re positioning your boat to retrieve your lures with the current, not against it, because bass position themselves to capture whatever food the current naturally pushes into their faces.

Quote of the Day

We find pleasure and solitude near the bank as we watch raccoons and snakes and deer.

– Billy Dance talkin' 'bout bank fishin'. I woulda picked frogs, turtles and, you know, bass, but that's just me.
