Today’s Top 3

1. Cage match: TN’s Chickamauga vs. OK’s Arbuckle.

The no-holds-barred fists of fury swingfest continues on these lakes. This weekend:

Chick

> BFL record broken with a 40-14 limit.

> Staging area with stumps near deep water and a shallow flat. “I caught them all on the 3-arm, 6-blade Hog Farmer umbrella rig fitted with 3 1/2″ Big Bite Baits Cane Thumpers.”

“Hog farmer” = funny! If you’re not counting, that’s 3 Chick limits of 37.96, 44.30 and now 40-14 in the last 3 weeks, all caught at least partly by local guide Rogne Brown (dude with the ZZ Top). Plus a 13.90 that just might be the state record.

Arbuckle

> J.D. Kent of Durant reeled in a 13.86-lb largemouth [this weekend]…the 15th largest in the all-time Oklahoma Top 20 largemouth records.

> Used a Jewel Bait HC finesse football jig and a Yum Craw Papi trailer on a hump in 20′ with a deep creek channel swing close by.

So that’s added to two 40+ limits from Arbuckle this year.

Yep, getting the expected spring donkey kongs from TX and CA, with FL maintaining its usual silence…for some reason. But TN and OK are on fie-a!

2. And the Falcon Elite winnah is…no one yet.

Rare move, but happened: Day 4 of the Falcon Elite was postponed due to high winds…but not because of danger to the competitors?

> Keith Combs: “It probably wouldn’t be anything on the lake we haven’t seen before. We’d go do what we need to do to catch fish. But we have to consider our Marshals, fans following us and the media who would be out there covering the event.”

I get it but…. My money was on Clunn to take it if they had to fish in crappy weather.

Sandstorm!

Couple quotes from the Bassmaster.com live blog today:

> Gary Klein: “I only need 38 pounds at this next spot and I’ll be okay.” [Lol!]

> Josh Bertrand: “You know, I’ve been pretty lucky with getting crankbaits out of trees this week.” [He meant trees under the water….]

3. Can’t believe how they never asked me about it on camera and just let others slander.

Alton Jones on his Facebook page in reference to he and Dean Rojas fishing the same water at the Sabine River, and comments made about same on the TV show I guess (haven’t seen it yet!).

News

1. NH doing high school bass fishing trial program.

Yep, “live free or die” New Hampshire. Awesome. Are you listening AL, FL, etc.?? I mean, seriously. Get with the program.

2. Deets on Bass Fishing Hall of Fame plans.

> Lee said early projections show the hall of fame could be a massive tourist attraction for Cullman, and he believes it will attract more than 250,000 visitors per year.

I don’t know, man. Hope it happens, but…I think that’s getting into baseball/basketball HOF #s.

3. Slight change to Mille Lacs, MN smallie regs.

> The new regulation is a 17-20″ protected slot. The possession limit is six, with only one longer than 20″. Previously, all smallmouth bass less than 21″ had to be immediately released and the possession limit was one.

4.USFWS sending record $$$ to states.

They do it every year, huge source of funding for state F&G agencies, this time it’s a record because…guess:

Firearm/ammo sales have been through the roof.

Tip of the Day

Hackney: Matching bait color to water color.

This was a new one on me, from a recent The Bass U session:

> “I like to match baits to the water color. I like brown baits in brown water. I like black baits in black water.

> More times than not, I know that fish has survived by doing things right – not making any mistakes. He’s seen all of it.

> So I feel like doing something that matches the water color doesn’t stand out so much. It’ll be more natural and I have a better chance of getting a bite.

    “Slight Change”….?? Going from possession limit of 1 to 6? That’s a 600% increase.
