Today’s Top 5

1. This for cheating or…

..lure retrieving? Wachoo think:

Whole thang:

Detail shot:

> Last Monday a bass angler throwing a swimbait in the Conejos Arm area of El Capitan Reservoir [CA] snagged an odd device.

> The device looks to be made up of a single tire cable chain, used on small cars and light trucks in place of traditional snow trains on ice or snow covered roads. On one end a yellow nylon rope was attached, on the other end two lead pyramid weights….

> Presumably an angler could slowly troll the device along the bottom to snag lost swimbaits or rods. But contrary to that theory were…metal stringer clips (designed to hold fish on a stringer), two on each side of the contraption.

If that’s a lure retriever I’m a ham sammich.

2. Runaway bass boat, body found.

Check this vid, a bassin’ boat doing donuts in OK’s Clarmore Lake after ejecting its two riders. Sounds like neither was wearing a PFD and no kill switch used? One was rescued, one young man drowned and the body just recovered. Awful.

Take the time to be safe peeps!

3. How big bass boats are.

It’s one thing to say or step onto 22 horizontal feet, but vertical?

Not sure what Bass Cat’s doing here, but a cool shot….

4. I know my buddy Joe is about to get his butt handed to him.

don barone writing about rookie Joe Sancho fishing his first Elite. Other stuff:

> “I’m shocked, I had no real idea just how fast, and how good these guys really are, no idea.”

> And so, we have a NYC electrician, signing autographs. Which is the absolute beauty of this sport….

5. F for F&S.

Field & Stream article about live bait talks about water dogs with this pic:

Not a water dog, and also may not be a tiger salamander…and not all mudpuppies become tiger salamanders. Guess there aren’t any amfibulans in New York City (home of F&S)?

Least they got the nightcrawler photo right….

Tip of the Day

Dion Hibdon: Fishing mud.

> “A cold mud washing into the lake is not good. But if it’s been 60 degrees and raining steady for a couple of days and the rest of the lake is in the 40s, you better get to the bank because the fish are going there.”

> “If I run in a creek and it’s 2 degrees colder, I’m not going to give it much of a shot. But if I pull in there and it’s 2 or 3 degrees warmer, I’m finding the first rocky bank I can and starting my search.”

> Hibdon almost always starts looking for the right areas in creeks and bays off the main lake rather than the main lake itself. He has found through decades of fishing…that the main lake areas just don’t see that noticeable temperature change like you find further back in the creeks.

> “I will either throw something red or brown to mimic a crawfish or something white or chartreuse to mimic a shad. I will crank it slow and steady giving them time to find and hone in on the bait in the dirtier water.”

Quote of the Day

That takes some serious brain strength and I don’t have that.

St. Johns winnah Chris Lane talkin’ ’bout sight-fishin’ in crowds and why he didn’t/can’t do that. Also said:

> “I prayed all week to stay calm and stay focused.”

> “I found [his fish] in the monsoon with thunder and lightning. I debated whether I should even be out there.”
