Today’s BassBlaster 7/18/2012
Welcome to the BassBlaster, your daily email about all things bassin’. Hey — have you forwarded the BassBlaster to a bassin’ bud yet?! *|FACEBOOK:LIKE|* Today’s Top 3 Bait-related today, but first, wanted to convey my great sympathy to both families affected by the recent vehicle accident in Georgia involving Brent Ehrler and another party who [...]
Ike, KVD, Cranks, Colors
Gonna hit four things here. 1. You’ve probably heard the well-known saying in the fishing biz, that baits are made to “catch fishermen, not fish.” In other words, if it doesn’t catch your eye in the store, you’re not bringing it home, regardless of whether it catches ‘em or not. 2. Bearing that in mind, [...]
Line Hum a Factor in Cranking?
Been going over some BassGold data for Lake Fork (a popular request), saw in an article on the PAA tourney there in 2008 iwhere Kelly Jordon – who headed the winning team – said this about using 12-pound fluorocarbon to crank Fork’s heavy timber: Any heavier and they wouldn’t bite it. You can still get [...]
Ever Try a Misfit Crankbait?
Word is a while back on the Ar-Kansas River, there was a bait called the misfit that was all the rage. A crankbait painted black on top, yellow on the belly, and one side painted red and the other chartreuse. I’ve never in my entire bassin’ life seen a crankbait that was different colors on [...]
Clunn Story: Anyone Know Denver Waltham?
Check out the below, an old Bagley’s ad (now laminated) given to me by a buddy some moons ago at a tackle show somewhere. I’ve always been a big Clunn fan, and loved this retro piece. Anyhow, on the ad it says: “Rick credits a bite size chunk of balsa wood, given to him by [...]
Science: Bait Buoyancy
Buoyancy – In physics, buoyancy is a force exerted by a fluid that opposes an object’s weight. In fishing, it’s simply a good thing! If you’re a fish, you want to be pretty much neutrally buoyant, allowing you to just hang in the water column effortlessly. If you’re a bait, you can go be all [...]
More from “The Belt Sander Diaries”
If you do any cranking at all, you’ve heard about past issues with the DT Series of baits, that being the lips would break in them. Some guys said randomly, others said it’s the weed slapping that did it. In my case, it was throwing it a bit too close to some riprap – [...]
Science: You Could Learn a Lot From a Belt Sander
Were you one of those kids growing up that always had to tear something apart to see what made it tick? Do you have every episode of ‘Home Improvement’ saved on DVD? Want to really know what the differences are between $20 crankbaits and $4 baits? If so, then read on…

R U Ready to Throw the Rock
by Steve Magnelia of Amistad Tackle Down here in Texas it’s almost time to break out the deep divers and the long rods. I’m read to launching a missile, and for me it’ll be one of the best newer deep-diving baits out there, the Spro Little John DD.

More From Clunn About Squarebills
I’m on a mission to get caught up on this squarebills in early spring thing, and have been wasting all kinds of time on the hinterwebz trying to track down more info – and happened across the following article written by Rick Clunn himself. The article is on fishingworld.com, a website I still can’t figure [...]
Holy Cow, Clunn Squarebill Vids!
Isn’t the interwebz great – sometimes, anyway. You can be minding your own bidness when someone sends you a link that leads to another link and so on – and before you know it you’ve wasted 3 hours of your day/night…. Luckily in this case it wasn’t a waste. Happened on two vids of Rick [...]
Fritts and…Who Else Sits and Reels?
Everyone knows Paul Elias is the kneel-and-reel guy, ever since he won the ’82 Classic doing exactly that. But what about sit-and-reel? Doesn’t rhyme, not as catchy, but David Fritts made a pile of money doing it, and I’m betting at least some other Northern Carolina boys do the same – or at least did. [...]
Fishin’ Tip: Squarebills in the ’40s
I’ve never done it. Never fished a crankbait in water that cold. As Brian recently mentioned in an early-spring bait selection post, I like to swim a jig in early spring. It works, I have confidence in it, etc. Have tried a spinnerbait, that can work too for me, but not a crankbait
