Today’s Top 3

Hope yours was Merry and you’re having a good start to 2013. What’s your bassin’ new year’s resolution – a new PB? Best limit ever? What? Let me know and if we get enough we’ll run the best ones.

1. If I enter a tournament, I’m going to fish as hard as I can.

– The always dangerous Denny Brauer on fishing the Texas EverStarts this year.

First he said, “I really don’t have any goals right now except to have a good time and fish with some friends,” but….

2. 13.34-lb ShareLunker, TX Lake Dunlap.

Congrats Matthew Moccia. Looks sorta like a giant spot, doncha think?

Word on the TFF is he was fishing the channel about a quarter of a mile away from the launch under the bridge using a Norman DD20.

3. Hard-bait scent patches coming?

By way of bioengineering….

> Rubigo’s [drug-delivery patch] technology was able to transmit compounds without using drug stabilizers that can irritate skin. Also, it was adept at delivering drugs to a specific site on the body, making skin cancer an ideal target….

> Investors thought the technology was promising, but wouldn’t give them any money. Amid Rubigo’s struggle to raise funds, Nickels, who lives by a small lake, spent some time fishing. He wasn’t catching as many fish as usual and stopped into a bait shop. The store recommended he buy a soft plastic nightcrawler lure that contained fish attractant.

> After a far more successful fishing outing, he returned to the store and requested a hard fishing lure with attractant, but discovered there wasn’t such a product available.

> He shared the experience with Harpstead, and the two…modified their patch so it could be applied to a fishing lure and began testing it out….

> So far the feedback has been positive, and the company is ramping up manufacturing of the product. Nickels hopes to begin selling the lure….

> They’ve been able to largely self-fund the company, and found a manufacturer that was willing to produce the lure in exchange for an equity stake in Rubigo.

News

1. Pete Gluszek signs with Gamma Line.

Pete has been and could again be an Elite angler, but stays at the triple-A level. Great stick. Gamma prez Dale Black said, “Pete is not only a great tournament fisherman, but he‘s also dedicated to teaching through the Bass University, and we really like that.”

2. Chapmans, Martens, Howell start magazine-like website.

3. RIP to two fishin’ bros.

> Nick Adams, co-founder (along with the Lindners) of Lindy Little Joe.

> Bill Gautsche, inventor of the Billy Finn bucktail.

Tip of the Day

Kevin Short: Winter river fishing.

> If the conditions are such that there is some visibility in the water, even if it’s below 40 degrees, bass can be caught.

> Structure fishing a river during the winter revolves around access to deep water. “Deep is going to be relative to the river system that you’re fishing,” he says.

> Short recommends channel swings as a great starting point on a river in winter. “These can be especially good if there’s something that will concentrate bass within that bend,” he says. “It could be anything from rock along the outside bank to a rock jetty or wing dam — just something that the fish can get around.”

> “I’m either going with a crankbait or a jerkbait this time of year,” he says. “If the water drops below about 45 degrees, my No. 1 bait is a jerkbait,” Short explains. “From the mid-40s to the mid-50s, it’s going to be some kind of crankbait.”

> “At all costs, I’m going to try to avoid current,” he says. “Bass get finicky when it’s cold, so when you throw current into the mix, bass become almost impossible to find.”

Quote of the Day

They thought we were the evil witches.

Jerry McKinnis on the WI DNR. Also said:

> They came out to our events and found out that we were really good guys and a lot of things they thought happened didn’t happen at all.

So the WI DNR had been making policies based on supposition, rumor and BS? And they’re NOT bass fishermen?! (lol)
