Today’s Top 3

1. On Monday, a story of mine will go up on Bassmaster.com that was almost exactly a year in the making.

The one and only don barone dropping a bomb of a hint – after dropping mob and other criminal references. Guess the first site I’m visiting Monday morning…. Maybe I’ll call don before then, can’t take the suspense….

2. The real challenge will be to advance the sport past its current fanbase of people like me.

Bassin’Fan columnist Joe Balog talking about the MLFers and the potential effect their particular brand of fishin’ TV could have.

Guess bassin’ folks will talk forever about “growing the sport,” but it ain’t gonna happen – which is not a comment on what MLF is doing btw.

Key word above is “fanbase.” If you’re talking fans who don’t fish, that’s a pipe dream imo. Make it “new fans who are already participants” or just “participants” and it’s a different story…maybe.

3. Where to fish in MS? Pickwick???

According to the MS Bass Tournament Program 2012 Annual Report (pdf), Pickwick had 6 of the top 10 heaviest derby limits last year (Ferguson had 3) and the top 8 heaviest fish weighed in tourneys. The top #s were 31.20 lbs and 12.56 lbs respectively.

C’mon…Pickwick is seriously that good now??

Tip of the Day

Big Show: Fishing big worms deep.

> The primary key to fishing big worms, Scroggins says, is fishing them where bass live [no way!!!!!], but in slightly deeper water. Although he has caught bass as shallow as 7 or 8 feet, big worms are generally more effective at depths of 15 feet or deeper.

> With the YUM Ribbontail worm, he’s trying to cover a lot of water or working vertical drops so he can take advantage of the worm’s swimming action.

> The real key to worm fishing this type of structure, he emphasizes, is having a quick, sharp break. It doesn’t have to be that deep or long, either, just steep enough to produce an abrupt depth change. Current will make it more attractive to bass, especially if it flows into the break at the inside of a turn. Rocks, stumps or other cover only make it better.

> “When you find a place like this, bass will be on top of the break when they’re feeding,” Scroggins points out, “and when they’re not feeding they’re usually right along the side. Rarely do I actually find them on the bottom of the break.

> “I cast to the top of the structure at an angle and let the worm swim down and across with the current so I can cover more of the break with each cast. I think your worm’s swimming action is really important in this type of fishing because it makes the lure look more natural.”

Quote of the Day

I like spending time in my boat even if it’s sitting on the trailer.

– Uh…okay? Classic champ Cliff Pace. Wonder if he has a flat screen TV on it….

Also said: “It’s a great place to think about my next day on the water or my next tournament.”

    Jay,
The link in your second topic of “today”s top 3” about Joe Balog’s opinion takes up (back) to an empty page that dates back to saturday december 30th 1899! Yep, this page is quiet old wouldn’t you say?
That being said, I would love to read the actual article it refers to but can’t seem to find it!
    Regards

Yea, Pickwick is that good. But, the other lakes in MS suck. Well, the ones I’ve fished.
Ever here of the Mississippi Share Lunker program? Or how the MS state dept. of conservation is doing a study on the adaptability of Florida strain bass in it’s states waters?
How about the plans the Magnolia state has to increase it’s boater accessibility to it’s abundance of waters?
    Me neither.
I guess their content with their influx of tax revenue from Native American casinos.
