Winning U Miss baits, Two odd baits, Trophy bass tip

Welcome to the BassBlaster, your daily-ish roundup of everything you need to know in bassin’!

Today’s Top 3

Lizard wins Upper Miss.

Ray-o-Start at Lacrosse, WI, the state where you can’t cull, can’t even think about culling, can’t kiss a bass, can’t use more than half a hook, etc. Anyhow, Jimmy “I ain’t JJ” Johnson won it by 2.5 lbs with 45-07 over 3 days:

> Johnson was targeting subtle changes on the wing dam that would hold the bigger class of smallmouth…either sand transitions or bends in the wing dam. He had several spots like this that sprawled the entire length of Pool 8. Another key was that these wing dams featured the most current flow with the shallowest water.

> Over the first day and a half of the tournament Johnson used a 3/8-oz Lethal Weapon Swim Jig (blue pearl) tipped with a Yamamoto Swim Senko [looks like Laminate Smoke color].

> [Changed to a] Carolina-rigged Yamamoto Lizard late on day 2 [and for day 3].

> “The swim jig and lizard are my one-two punch on the river. When stuff gets tough, that lizard is by far my go-to bait. And really I think the biggest factor for me was noticing the change the fish were making…those fish were pulling off of points and setting up on the wing dams.”

Btw, Gary Yamamoto himself finished 5th in that derby, using a Creme worm…J!

> He used the new larger-sized Kut Tail Worm from his namesake company. He inserted a screw in the head of the bait and rigged the worm backwards (also called a Neko Rig).

2nd-4th used frogs, a swim jig and a Zoom Brush Hog.

Bays de Not.

After a wind-blown-out Friday, Saturday and Sunday trying to stay busy/not go nuts, the Elites are fishing again today. Stoked, but it’s like the Chicago/Lake Michigan Classic except without any junk-fishing river/canal water. #woo

Now we know why those lake smallies get so big: Only 5 fishing days a year hahaha!

From the Bassmaster.com Live Blog, looks like it’s going to be a nail-biter between the Hack Attack and Todd Faircloth for Angler of the Year…and then there’s a guy named A-Mart…though word is Faircloth’s long run is to a spot that gives him:

Ever hear of these-here baits?

Special tuned Bagley – anyone know what this is?

Imakatsu Crawler? If you’ve got $75 you can’t seem to spend on anything else:

News

1. J-Pow wins Bassmaster ROY.

That’s Jacob Powroznik, FLWer and this year an Elite rookie. He’s a dang good fisherman…and hates that nickname. Since this is fishin’, that means he’s gonna hear it a lot. Congrats J-Pow!

2. Bill Lewis re-hires Broadwell.

Rat-L-Trap maker Bill Lewis Outdoors says it has re-hired Richard Broadwell as national sales manager. Richard had that position for more than a decade through the’90s.

3. BPS hires M&A firm.

Mergers and acquisitions. Wonder what that means? Article says may be trying to raise funds by selling a stake, who knows.

4. BassU: Gluszek’s shallow tips.

> Gluszek describes techniques for both finesse and power fishing situations with crankbaits, chatterbaits, spinnerbaits and plastics. Another of Pete’s best techniques for fishing around shallow cover is a Carolina rig, which has become a lost art in his opinion.

5. NY: Fine for not cleaning boats.

New York + New England = the new California. Law won’t make a lick of difference, but that never stopped politicians.

6. FLWer Canterbury on BassEdge Radio.

7. LA: Benefit derby on T-Bend.

Oct. 18 for basser Jason Wallace.

8. TX: BB reader selling Phoenix.

To help dad with medical expenses. Specs and shots here. Believe price is $40k w/o Power-Poles and $41k with Poles.

Tip of the Day

How to catch trophies.

Tip from a FL bass guide:

> The bait selection will be large plastic worms, weedless spoons, Medlock jigs, spinnerbaits and soft jerkbaits. All will be retrieved using the “walking the dog”-type action, with the rod-jerk timed as the bait hits the bottom.

> Do I retrieve the spinnerbaits and jerkbaits at the bottom too? I certainly do, just like anglers fish a worm.

> The objective is to never allow the bass to see the bait clearly, with hopes of triggering a mistake in judgment.

> Bass can see better looking up, so my bait will be as deep as possible with hopes of putting the bait below the bass’s clear view, making it harder to analyze.

> The largest bass in the lake will ‘not’ strike a top water bait or anything moving medium to fast speeds.

> I’ll work the deepest shoreline areas first, for the first two hours or so: the wave-action holes first, then if no success, the leeward holes if they are nearby. When the moon ‘overhead period’ occurs…the strategy will change to strictly the wave-action deep shoreline areas….

> When fishing outside of the major feeding migration period, it is essential to employ the ‘silent bait entry’ into the water. If you can’t…be sure to wait at least a minute (that means counting to 60 slowly) then try to move the bait….

Quote of the Day

Now you learn from everybody. There used to be only a handful of guys you learned anything from.

The Hack Attack talkin’ ’bout how good the Elites are now vs when he started.
