Today's Top 4

1. Hack jigs win at Cayuga.

That makes two wins for the Hack Attack this year, one FLW crankin' win and now jiggin' at Cayuga – WON BY 10 lbs! Deets:

> Hackney’s strategy was go after the lake’s bigger bass…sacrificing quantity for quality [day 3 he only weighed 4!].

> “I fish like that when there’s deep grass. When you catch them, they’re typically bigger fish on average.” [Shweet Jimmy Overstreet shot below  that's how you flip yo!]

> His primary spot was a grassy ledge that dropped off from 4 to 10 feet, then leveled off into another flat grass ledge, and then to a rocky bottom about 15 feet down. “The fish were relating to that deep grass edge,” he said.

> The jig [1- or 1.25-oz] was his signature Strike King Hack Attack Jig (blue craw) with a Rage Craw trailer (blue sapphire) to mimic the bluegill in the grass that bass were feeding on.

2. I can promise you, I hate it right now.

KVD talkin' on Bassmaster.com 'bout missing his first Classic since I believe 1990. Also in that article:

> "It was almost surreal (Friday), the way things were going badly for me. When I would get a bite, I'd lose it. One decent fish was the difference between me being in the top 50 and going to Michigan or sitting out on the sideline."

> VanDam has seven Angler of the Year titles in his career. His previous worst finish in the AOY race was 26th. "Other than that, I've never been out of the top 10," he said.

> "The fact that I messed it up so bad this year tells me that I need to really re-think how I'm going about these events. Believe me, I'm going to have a different focus next year."

Fact: He WOULD HAVE had enough points to make the Classic – and for that matter the entire AOY field would look different – if the BASSFest derby, where he finished 2nd, counted. All Elites got equal points, so it basically didn't count.

Opinion: Next year the other Elites better be totin' along this TP holder:

3. Gagliardi's winning baits.

A little dusty now, but Anthony Gagliardi won the Forrest Wood Cup – after qualifying by 1 oz for it after getting DQd (no points) in the first derby of the season. FLW Cup was on Lake Murray, SC, his home lake.

> On days 1-2, Gagliardi fished a 5" Basstrix swimbait (scaled sardine) on a 3/8-oz Buckeye swimbait head over shallow grass points where bass were chasing blueback herring in about 5 feet.

> He also caught fish the first three days in the Saluda River on a Zoom Ol’ Monster worm Texas rigged on a 4/0 hook with a 1/4-oz weight.

> On the final day, he committed to casting Zoom Flukes and Yamamoto D Shads (white and olive shad, pictured) on a 4/0 weighted-shank hook with 10- and 12-lb Gamma fluorocarbon. Fishing in about 15 to 20 feet down near the dam….

4. Local vs. Gagliardi and Martin.

Don't know if you heard, but apparently a local was making life hard for a couple Cup contenders. Yes, all fishermen have every right to fish any spot but:

> Mark Rose [a stand-up dude no doubt] was sitting in his wife’s car nearby, sipping on coffee and watching Gagliardi fish [on day 4]. He says he was so infuriated by the man’s actions that he almost decided to go launch his boat…and give the angler a “respectful piece of my mind.”

> “It made me so furious to see that guy cast over Anthony’s line. I wanted to tell him what a bad sport he was about it."

> Scott Martin had a confrontation with the same fisherman the day before. He arrived in the cove early in the morning, and found the angler there ahead of him. “I put my trolling motor down, and before I even cast I hollered at him, ‘Good morning sir, mind if I make a cast or two across the point?’ He said, ‘Might as well. It’s not going to do any good anyhow.’ So I started casting away from him.

> "Then he started coming at me fast. I hollered ‘Hey, man, we’ll be out of your hair after tomorrow,’ just trying to be friendly. All the while he’s coming at me and cursing under his breath but loud enough that I can hear him. Then I asked him where he wanted me to fish, meaning where did he want me to get to be out of his way. He waved his hand around and said, ‘I’m fishing all this.’

> “I decided to make a big loop around him and fall in behind somewhere. But he turned with me and headed right at me. When he got about 20 yards away, I said, ‘Dude, are you going to ram me?’ He was like a dog guarding his yard, but he finally turned around and went back.

> "I moved on, thinking that I’d go back and fish that part of the cove when he left…."

Srsly? Someone sent in this pic of the supposed perpetrator at his family reunion:

Tip of the Day

Anthony Gagliardi: Single Fluke rig.

> Gagliardi opted for a single bait rather than the “double fluke” rig often used on blueback herring lakes.

> “I like the single because I like to make precise, accurate casts. The double rig is good sometimes, but it’s cumbersome, and if they come up busting and you get tangled, you’ll miss them.

> “I can throw the single fluke far enough, and I can be accurate with it. That’s important because when that fish comes up and busts, you have 3 seconds max to get a bait there. If you don’t, he’s gone."

Quote of the Day

I almost felt like I was fishing for a fish that didn’t exist.

Greg Hackney talkin' 'bout fishin' the final day at Cayuga, with a nice bag already in the well.

Was it the dunkleosteus Hack?

Oh wait…guess that one did exist….
