Today's Top 4

1. I had crawfish pinchers all over my boat.

– Beaver FLW Tour winner Matt Arey. Interestin' pattern – hoppin' a ball-head jig in shallow, dirtier water – featured on BassGold's pattern o' the week:

2. 13.11-lber outta Chickamauga??

That part I believe, but check these measurements: length 31 3/16", girth 27 5/8". Those sound world-record big so…hope his scale wasn't off!

3. Two new lake record limits.

Havasu, AZ: 28.15 lbs.

> Mike and Mark Williams brought in 28.15 pounds of Havasu largemouths giving them the early lead in the event, and a new lake record.

Arbuckle, OK: 42.71 lbs.

> Not only did the massive limit award them 1st place for the tournament but it also allowed the duo to claim the record for the largest 5 bass limit in the state.

> …Arbuckle yielded a 42.04lb record stringer to former Elite Series angler Jeff Reynolds and his partner Johnny Thompson…last January on this very lake.

Hey – Thing fished that derby too!

4. I drove to Gadsden, AL Friday night for the captains meeting at Back40 Brewery, and sampled some exceptional brews.

– Guess 'yak fishermen can tie one on the night before a bassin' event. But bettin' that obeyin' the call o' nature the next day'd be kinda tough….

5. Derp o' the day.

Jigs are simple bass lures that can be as basic as a hook and a small metal ball on top.

A small metal ball?? Mo':

> The top of the jig is painted with fish eyes and the hook is camouflaged with a frilled plastic skirt. [Frilled??]

> The Jig-and-Pig lure is a skirted jig with a pork trailer, or extra hook, attached to the main hook. [Extra hook??]

> For anglers who don’t like the mess of brine solutions [brine solutions??], there are plenty of alternatives like chunky, plastic frogs and plastic grubs with wiggly tails.

You feelin' wiggly?

Tip of the Day

Greg Hackney: Jiggin' tips.

> “Bass rarely slam a jig. Sometimes it’s just a ‘pressure’ bite, where you feel a little weight on the line but nothing convincing. Other times it might be a slight ‘tick.’ Get a feel for that, your confidence will soar.”

> “If your favorite rod is a lighter action, get a finesse jig or a 1/4-oz jig that matches well with it. In fact, I recommend anglers start with a smaller profile jig; it gets you more bites and confidence will build quicker.”

> In early spring or cold water, Hackney tips his jig with a Strike King KVD Chunk that has a big profile but less action.

> As the water heats into the upper 60s, he opts for a Strike King Rage Craw with active, vibrating legs.

> “There are times when rate of fall of a jig can be critical, so don’t be afraid to experiment with trailers."
