Today's Top 5

1. Co-angler: 2 days, 9 bass, 64-07!

Day 1 zero at the Rayovac Santee Cooper, then:

> On day 2, veteran Santee Cooper guide Lindwood Thornhill put "Marvelous" Marvin Reese on a magic carpet ride of big bass that flew him straight into the tournament lead with 5 monsters weighing 31 pounds, 13 ounces, including a 9-9 and 10-2.

> Since Thornhill was the pro leader and Reese was the co-angler leader, the two were paired again on the final day…. On day 3, Reese only had four bites, but they weighed an astounding 32 pounds, 10 ounces – almost a pound heavier than the previous day when he weighed in a limit.

He won by 32 POUNDS!

2. It rained so much here today, I actually wore 2 sets of rain gear…at the same time…all day.

Johnny Crews at St. Johns Elite practice. Sounds…humid.

3. Sexy bass DUO.

Just plain sexy:

> While only available in saltwater items at the moment, we do plan to extend "Nature Designs" series of colors to Realis too this year. Here is the first example of what we have planned.

Tip of the Day

Keith Combs: Fighting jumpers.

> If a fish is fixing to jump, I’ll lower the rod tip but won’t stick the rod into the water. If you do that, you’re not going to be able to let the rod bend work for you. I’ve seen anglers stick their rod into the water but that’s a big mistake.

> Do hold the rod down, but pull and reel hard to maintain that rod bend. When that fish is jumping, that needs to be when you are torquing the hardest on your reel and your rod. Most anglers do the exact opposite by easing up on a jumping fish for fear the line will pop or hooks rip out – and when you ease up even for an instant, you lose it.

> So sense what the fish is doing, bring him up out of the cover first and foremost, and if he wants to jump, you’re not going to be able to stop him – but don’t bow to him. When he’s jumping, that’s when you want to make your hardest cranks and pull the hardest against that fish just to make sure you have your line completely out of the water going directly toward that bass. Again, this is the opposite of what most anglers do, and why they often lose jumping fish.

> Just think about it. He’s going to shake free if he gets slack. He’s going to stay hooked up if he’s got constant tension on him.
